Part 5 – What Shall We Do?

The Question and the Answer!

Acts Chapter 2 records the outpouring of the Holy Spirit promised by Jesus. The disciples had waited in the upper room for this power, and when they received the Spirit, it was quite dramatic! The people appeared to onlookers as if they were drunk. A crowd gathered around the animated scene, and the Apostle Peter stood and began to preach. It was his preaching that raised THE QUESTION, “What shall we do?” And THE ANSWER was recorded for posterity – including you and me!

This is a very exciting series of scriptures because we have both THE QUESTION asked by those wanting to know how to be saved, and we have the verbatim ANSWER by an apostle of Jesus Christ!

The Promise of the Holy Spirit Fulfilled

Acts 2:1-4

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

  • The SOUND came from heaven, and it was the sound of the 120-plus disciples speaking with tongues as they were baptized by the Spirit!

Acts 2:6-7

Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

Then the Apostle Peter stood up and began to preach. (Remember, he is the one Jesus gave the keys!) He preached of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The people hearing his words, the gospel, began to feel guilty of the crucifixion.

The Question

Acts 2:36-37

Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

In response to Peter’s preaching, the people asked the most important question in the Bible! “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

The Answer was given by an Apostle of Jesus Christ

We have the verbatim ANSWER to this question from an Apostle, and he wasn’t standing alone. The other 11 apostles were with him as he explained what a person must do to be saved!

Acts 2:38-42

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

When the Apostle Peter preached THE GOSPEL, it included all the foundational cornerstones laid by Jesus!

  • Repentance
  • Remission of sins through baptism in water in the name of Jesus.
  • The promise of the Holy Spirit which they had just received!

This was the Gospel Jesus delivered to His Apostles and commissioned them to spread to all the people in every corner of the earth. For every tribe, every tongue, and in every time.
